I've read a bit of negativity elsewhere on Ghost Town's radio fortunes this week, but for the life of me I can't understand the reason(s).

My guess is that the negativity comes from those that want instant results. They believe the songs should shoot up the charts instantly. Anything less is a failure.

There are a handful of artists who enjoy instant chart success with their albums/singles. For others it can take weeks and even months.

A few weeks ago I read about Walk the Moon's single Shut Up and Dance being released last year and just recently having success. So...I did some research --

It was released in September . Didn't debut in the Hot 100 until November at #98. Moved into top 40 in March. Peaked at #4 in May. It's now at #5. Eight months to reach it's peak position.

And another current hit, Andy Grammer's 'Honey I'm Good', has a similar story. Released in November but didn't really start becoming a hit until May. It's now #9.

When Andy was asked about the slow progress of the song in a recent Billboard interview this is what he said...

The album came out in August and the single is just really taking off now. Are you surprised that it's taken so long for it to take off?

It's so interesting because everybody makes a split media-wise. A release date isn't as important to me as it used to be. Like first-week numbers. Because there's not the same group of people that are all looking to one place, so it takes little while for it to permeate and actually get to everybody. As long as you have something that is actually quality and really good, I believe that in today's market it will actually get out. We put the album out and right off the bat "Honey" started doing amazing on Spotify out of nowhere, without anything. So then Spotify went really crazy, then Pandora started doing good, then the radio started really picking up on it, and now it's starting to be everywhere.

SA WB was very enthusiastic right from the start!

All in all I think this is a much MUCH better strategy this time around: getting the public to hear songs before the release lead to people be already familiar with the songs and be able to enjoy them more during live or TV performances. Single availability led the song to become familiar and sparked the interest for the whole album.

In comparison FYE was first heard one day before the album dropped! And BTIKM ...I don't even remember as it was pretty underwhelming and this single was hastily replaced with NCOE, which was a repeat of FYE instantly replaced with WDYWFM - it seemed that the singles and their releases weren't given much thought and the choice and timing seemed kind of random. Very much different this era! Hope it all works (keeping my finger crossed).

Ghost Town is doing very good in the Netherlands. It's been top 10 iTunes overall from about the RTL Late Night performance on June 5th and it jumped into the top 10 in one of our charts today as well.



In the other charts it's doing very well as well. In the Spotify top 50 for the Netherlands it's also #14 with 70k streams/ day!

And this is happening because of people who like the song, not just Adam fans. I bet most of them hardly know who Adam Lambert is. WWFM was also a top 10 hit here and people do know that song.

Plagiarism? Nah! I just listened to the whole song ("Kom Kom Kom" by the group Solen), and while there are passing melodic similarities to the initial lines of GT's verses, the two songs have only melancholy in common after that

Now, if the chorus of GT had sounded similar to this song, I would have been worried. But there's not even a hint of it in "Kom Kom Kom."

This brouhaha will no doubt help Solen, but it will also encourage people to listen to GT as well, so I can only envisage win, win!

ETA: There is actually a more striking similarity between the melody on the title words of "I Was Born to Love You" and those of "Another Lonely Night," but I don't see Freddie's estate making a song and dance about it! And for good reason, since it's just a fleeting melodic similarity.

These things are virtually inevitable, anyway. Hell, even "FYE" reminded one critic at one point of Sam Sparro's "Black and Gold." (And not without reason either.)

The latest Billboard Hot 100 chart is out, and Ghost Town is hanging in there for a second week!

It dropped four spots to #77---no big deal, especially considering that some were wondering whether the song would even survive in the chart this week, with its US iTunes position weakening of late (it's currently at #109, so streaming and gifting will be super important for Billboard Week 3 over the next few days).

Oddly enough, it's Radio that showing the song the most love. On the most recent Pop Radio update, it was back to its peak position (to date) of #28, while on HAC and AC it was at #18 and #34, respectively.
