The other three I can't get out of my head at the moment are Shame, Rumours, and The Original High. Initially, I wasn't so keen on Rumours, but it's crept up on me ::smile::

If I had my way, though, the next three singles would be (in this order): TOH, These Boys, and Evil in the Night. Of course, TOH and These Boys, in particular, cry out for a summer release...
I am in total agreement with you on every song you mention sticking in your head, Derek. These same ones are sticking in mine too. Rumors was not initially one of my most favorite tracks either and it has now grown on me and seems very radio friendly. Cannot get These Boys out of my head! Not that I want to. ::smile:: Really love these bonus tracks. I just can't believe how good the WHOLE album is. My favorite yet.

It's already my favourite of Adam's three albums too, and I actually feel that if this had been his debut disc, then sales would have vastly exceeded what FYE received---partly because it's a much more cohesive album. It also gives us Adam's vocals upfront, rather than submerging them in all that production that we heard on FYE---my biggest complaint about that album.

It really does seem to me that Adam, Shellback and Max Martin have done what they had said they would do: zero in on everything that was great about FYE and Trespassing, and incorporate---but at the same time enhance---those strengths. We still get glorious Ballad Adam, for example, with There I Said It, but with less theatricality than Soaked on FYE and none of the lyrical overwroughtness (and slight repetitiveness) of Underneath on TP. I still love both those earlier songs, but I have to acknowledge that There I Said It packs a greater emotional wallop because of its simple honesty (and relatively stripped-back production).

We also get more of the Experimental Adam that I loved on the earlier albums---e.g. Broken Open and Broken English---with Heavy Fire and The Light. No one can claim that he's sold out to Bubblegum Pop with tracks like these! In fact, I noticed that even on the Pop Justice thread for Adam that, contrary to the usual dismissiveness or condescension shown towards him there, both tracks had been singled out for praise. And for good reason! Both are pretty amazing, and I can't even begin to imagine their impact on fans when Adam eventually performs them live (as I'm sure he will).

Fun Adam hasn't disappeared either on TOH, especially thanks to the bonus tracks. "Shady" was one of my favourite tracks on TP---a perfectly formed gem, I call it---and "These Boys" is just as memorably camp and fun. Ditto "Shame."

Above all, I feel that the album emphasizes that Adam not only possesses one of the great pop voices, but that he's also one of the most compelling and versatile of today's pop artists. (I'd actually argue that he's Pop's most versatile male singer; I mean, who else could sing "These Boys" and "Heavy Fire" with equal conviction?!) And that's what reviewers should be highlighting. It's annoying when he doesn't get his full due---and even more galling when his versatility is held against him!

Hi: The credits were reproduced on Adamtopia.com the other day, and I'm pretty sure that they were taken straight from the liner notes. If correct, they showed that (contrary to what Wikipedia says) the only songs Adam didn't write on were Underground (so he can't be blamed for the "velcro" line ::haha:: ), The Light, Shame, and These Boys.

I would love to think that he had been involved in writing the lyrics on the perfectly constructed Shame and These Boys, particularly since these are so Adam (as others have noted), and I would have sworn that he'd had a hand in composing The Light---a Burning Man-type epic, if ever I heard one!

Still, co-writing on ten of the fourteen songs on the deluxe version is impressive. I realize that in some instances his input may have been minimal, but it's good to know that he played a major part in writing TOH, which is arguably the finest song on the album. That's reason enough for him to hold his head high as a songwriter. ::smile::

I'm utterly obsessed with the album today! (I've also been taking advantage of the fact that this is my last day of "freedom" for a bit, as final exams start tomorrow, and I'll then be buried in marking ::cryblownose::)

Of all the reviews, both professional and amateur, that I've read so far, AllMusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine comes closest to summing up my own thoughts on the album. I feel he's so bang on the money when he praises Ghost Town, for example, as having "elegantly skeletal cinemascapes" (love that description!), or singles out the superior production and Adam's "soaring vocal" on TOH for being "in service of the song." In other words, a music critic who actually listens closely:

http://www.allmusic.com/album/the-origi ... 0002843910

One of the few things I don't agree with him on is his description of the three bonus tracks as "each an effervescent delight." While that's certainly true of Shame and These Boys, After Hours is hardly a vivacious number ::haha:: But I've quickly become fond of its sexy vibe, and can fully appreciate why Adam described it as a worthy soundtrack to a sensual encounter ::tongue::

Anyway, after multiple playings, I'm still convinced that TOH has to be the next single, but I think Rumors deserves consideration as third or fourth single (probably third). As I wrote earlier, it didn't grab me straightaway, but its commercial appeal is now blindingly obvious, and I can easily see it smashing.

There's nothing on this magnificent album that is even mediocre in my book. "Things I Didn't Say" is currently the track I revisit least often, but it still surprises me (like all the tracks, it has something fresh to offer each time I play it), and would be a highlight on just about anyone else's album.

Finally!!! The New York Times actually gives Adam a positive review. It's never happened before, whether it was his studio work or his concerts (solo and with Queen). I'm amazed!
Maybe, to succeed, Mr. Lambert had to find a way to submit to something greater. And on “The Original High,” his third full-length record, he’s managed just that. The album is executive produced by Max Martin and Shellback, the Swedish pop mercenaries with abiding love of 1980s flash and 1990s dance music verve. They have found in Mr. Lambert an ability to be vague. Perversely, that’s set him free.

“Ghost Town” is perhaps his best single to date. At the first chorus, it becomes an early-’90s club thumper, and Mr. Lambert doesn’t try to best the beat. Instead, he becomes a house diva, singing with precision and ambition but in service of the song. The strategic restraint continues on “The Original High,” and even into “Another Lonely Night,” which could have come from the “Top Gun” soundtrack. He sings with particular intensity on “Lucy,” a grand-scaled 1980s rock-style epic, but even here he lets the guitar have the loudest word.

Mr. Lambert has attempted pop on this scale before, on his 2012 album, “Trespassing,” but he was still battling with style then. Here, Mr. Lambert has fully committed to formula: 10 out of these 11 songs are under four minutes. While there are a few missteps — Mr. Lambert doesn’t have the R&B sultriness required for “Underground,” and “Rumors” bizarrely cribs the jaunty synth pattern from Lil Wayne’s “Lollipop” — there are almost no extravagances. After years of spectacle, Mr. Lambert may have been saved by modesty. JON CARAMANICA

And the Boston Globe was even more glowing:
Adam Lambert shot to fame on “American Idol” for his commanding reworks of chestnuts like “Ring of Fire” and his eagerness to take his voice as high as it could go; he finished second in Season 8, but got a “Rolling Stone” cover story and a gig fronting Queen out of the deal. On his third post-“Idol” album he pulls back a bit, allowing the contours of his voice to shape mature pop songs about longing and desire. The brooding title track ruminates on viewing the past through rose-colored glasses, his formidable voice dropping at times to a near-whisper; his falsetto makes the verses of “There I Said It” build even more deliberately toward the sorry-not-sorry chorus. Club-ready tracks like “Things I Didn’t Say” and “The Light” pair his moodier outlook with pulsing beats. And Queen guitarist Brian May shows up for a juicy solo on the grinding bad-girl tale “Lucy.” It’s an appealing snapshot of how Lambert has grown, and how he’s still willing to surprise his listeners and himself. (Out Tuesday)MAURA JOHNSTON

ESSENTIAL “Lucy”
https://www.bostonglobe.com/arts/music/ ... story.html

It's interesting to see both the NYT and the Boston Globe reviewers singling out "Lucy."

ETA: And both reviews count for the album's Metacritic score! ::wheee::
